This volcano overlooks Lembata,
a modest little town that is the main commercial
and cultural center of the area. We hiked
up a large portion of its slop on the right
above: WOW - some amazing discoveries!
And that's the volcano we climbed
along with Chrissis' local friend, and with
Ray and Dewi too.
There's Naga just on the left
and behind this ultra-wide local working
trimaran squid boat in Riung, a tiny port
and village on the north side of Flores island.
Indonesia has the most amazing, and certainly
the largest, variety of trimarans anywhere
in the world: they work and sail everyday,
with huge fleets departing port at sunup
and returning at dusk under sail - wonderful
sights!
Captain Jack at the helm - of our dinghy!
- in Riung. We were treated like VIP's everywhere
we went on the Rally, with free Gala Dinners
and frequently were the recipients of kindly
offered gifts. Here, I'm wearing an Ikat
- a kind of lovely local weaving - a gift
that was given to us at one of the
many ceremonial encounters.
Here in Riung, there was great food and
wonderful dance with local bands playing
traditional music. One, a flute band, had
among a variety of bamboo flutes the most
amazing huge bass flutes.
Silolona, a 164 foot Pinisi
style of traditional Indonesian sailing ship,
became
the Rally Flag Ship in Riung. Some of the
best parties held aboard sailing
vessels are held aboard the Silolona!
This photo was borrowed from the Silolona
website.
Mangatii was a small island
stop about 80 miles north of Flores island
on the way up to historic Makassar.
Here's
Mangatii town's main drag. We seemed
to be among the first white folks seen in
this place in a few decades.
Exuberant child riots greeted
us and the adults were fascinated to see
the arrival of these Martians too.
Hugely friendly and helpful,
it was a delightful stop on the way north
to Makassar.
Makassar! Ah, much to tell
and much to show. . . coming.
Welcome to Indonesia!
Cram aboard!! How 'bout this local version
of an S.U.V., or "UT" as the
Ozzies call it!
