St. Martin
6/01

We sailed some 400 miles in mid June, the start of hurricane season,
from Blanquilla direct to St. Martin.
There we spent our time visiting with Chrissi's
father and youngest brother.

This is the infamous Le Select Bar in Gustavia.
We were given a motorcycle to ride while
we waited (in vain) for our new
outboard motor to arrive.

Nevis

This phenomenal jewel of an island captured our
hearts, right from our first view of her
cloud-capped splendor.

We arrived in Nevis early August, just in time for
the annual carnival festival called Culturama.

Culturama is a non-stop three day party complete
with parades, concerts and food fairs. Everyone is encouraged to dance, sing and celebrate life.

Montserrat

Approaching the volcano

Six years ago, this was a colorful and thriving
tropical island town. Now all you can see is
burned roofs. The buildings are buried up
to forty feet deep in volcanic ash.

Martinique

Saint Pierre, former capitol of the French West
Indies and known as the Paris of the Antilles in its
glory days, was destroyed by a volcano in 1911.
The entire population of the town was killed
except for one man who was imprisoned in the
dungeons of the local jail.
Today, you can see the remains of the
old town incorporated into the newer architecture.

We left lovely Martinique right after Hurricane
Chantal passed by, thankfully missing us by a few
dozen miles.

That was our cue to stop goofing off and get the
boat to a safer latitude.

from Martinique
- it was direct to Trinidad!
